The first episode of the first season aired on April 6, 2019, and the last episode aired on September 28, 2019. The dark, yet exciting plot lines coupled with the eye-catching imagery, quickly caught the attention of audiences around the world.
The Plot Line
The story follows the main character, Tanjirou Kamado, who is voiced by Natsuki Hanae. After the death of his father, Tanjirou had to step up and become the “man” of the house. In order to support his family, he started to sell charcoal. While the family has certainly experienced their fair share of difficulties, they are quite happy, loving, and supporting; however, their contentment quickly changed when demons came and attacked the family, killing all but Tanjirou and his sister, Nezuko, who is voiced by Akari Kito. To further complicate matters, Nezuko is transformed into a demon, as well, but she still has some human qualities; for example, she can still think like a human and has human-like feelings and emotions, as well. Tanjiro is devastated by the loss of his family and the transformation of his sister and decides that the only way that he can get vengeance is by becoming a demon slayer (hence the title of the series). In becoming a slayer of demons, Tanjiro hopes that he can return his sister back into a human and that he will be able to avenge the death of his loved ones.
Throughout the course of Tanjiro’s journey as a demon slayer, Tanjirou perfects his skills and becomes stronger and stronger. As the story unfolds, the he develops new abilities, including the ability to breath under water, which is a vital skill that he uses to battle the demons that he encounters. His sister, Nezuko, also develops new skills as the story unfolds. In particular, she becomes more and more like a human; however, she is still a demon and has to learn how to control her natural instincts of killing and eating humans. She also discovers that is has some unique abilities – Blood Demon Art, for example, a really awesome demon attack. She eventually figures out how she can sustain without having to sacrifice and eat human beings.
With each episode, new characters are introduced. Zenitsu Agatsuma, who is voiced by Hiro Shimono, another demon slayer, has a really cool power: Thunder Breathing. Inosuke Hashibira, who is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, another demon slayer, was raised by a wild boar and taught himself the skill of Beast Breathing.
While Tanjirou is happy to meet new people who share common interests, his sights are focused on one thing: avenging the death of his family. His quest further intensifies when he learns of the identity of the power demon whom created virtually all other demons, including his sister: Muzan Kibutsuji, who is voiced by Toshihiko Seki. In addition to being extremely powerful, Muzan is also in control of the Twelve Kizuki (the Twelve Demon Moons). In order to have a chance at defeating Muzan, Tanjirou and the rest of the demon slayers must first defeat the Twelve Kizuki.
A Look at the Characters
What really makes the Demon Slayer so incredible is the character development. You really feel connected to each of the characters and support their cause. Tanjirou, for example, is caring and compassionate, yet strong and focused. Experiencing this demon world through the eyes of the main character is what really makes the Demon Slayer saga shine.
Another thing that sets this story apart from similar series is the demons themselves. While yes, they do kill humans, the majority of them did not choose the become demons; in fact, they did not want to become these awful, cold-hearted, bloodthirsty creatures. The reason that they did is because Muzan tricked them or transformed them against their will. While Tanjirou wants to get revenge against all demons for what they did to his family, he grapples with his feelings, as he can really see how troubled they are by what they have become. The story highlights the past lives of these characters and gives viewers an understanding of what happened to them and how they were forced to become the new versions of themselves, which is actually quite sad.
It’s also interesting to follow Nezuko, Tanjirou’s sister, who was turned into a demon and the natural urges that she now feels to kill humans. She isn’t the only one like this. Dr. Tamayo, who is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto, is also a human-turned-demon who controls her innate desire to kill humans. Like Nezuko and all the others, Dr. Tamayo was turned into a new demon by Muzan. Upon being transformed, she turned on her family, killed them and ate them. Obviously, she was devastated by what happened and by what she did to her family. Being a highly skilled and very intelligent doctor, she was able to figure out a way to change her demon cells so that she only needs a minimal amount of blood and no human flesh to survive. Dr. Tamayo also works on developing a cure that will convert demons back into humans.
Of course, with the good, there is always bad, and some of the demons are really sinister. Despite this fact, however, you can’t help but feel sorry for them. In fact, sympathy is the reason why Tanjrou and other slayers kill demons; they do so not to destroy them, but rather to set them free and end their suffering.

The incredible graphics, the well-developed characters, and the incredible story line all combine to make Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) a gripping anime series. If you like anime and you’re looking for a series that offers real substance, we highly recommend tuning into Demon Slayer.
